The mutual fund industry came together on June 7th 2007 to support Mutual Funds Against Cancer (MFAC) raise in excess of $370,000 for it's newest mission in raising funds for The Center for Applied Cancer Sciences (CACS) at Dana Farber. CACS is creating a drug discovery and development pipeline for six of the deadliest cancers: colon, pancreas, lung, melanoma (skin), myeloma (blood) and glioblastoma (brain).
WEEI’s John Dennis, the “Official Voice” of Mutual Funds Against Cancer was on hand to emcee the banquet following the golf tournaments. The banquet, which was held at Pinehills, featured live and silent auctions as well as raffles, awards, and great speakers.
Highlights
The Golf Classic, sponsored by JPMorgan, hosted Over 380 golfers representing over 70 mutual fund and financial services firms, and due to our 2006 success, expanded to two golf venues including Pinehills Golf Club and Waverly Oaks. The first-place winners on each course were team John Hancock (Jones), JP Morgan (Nicklaus) and at Waverly Oaks, United Sports Associates (see below table for full results). The pinnacle of the event was at the 17th hole at Waverly Oaks, where KC Clark shot a hole in one! A tremendous feat, KC won his choice of 4-day cruise or airline tickets anywhere in US. KC, we wish you well in your travels!
Following the golf tournament, the day was further highlighted by a dinner and awards program also featuring a live and silent auction that raised over $30,000. Several special awards were presented at the banquet which was emceed by WEEI's John Dennis. Tori Rando was awarded the Guardian Angel scholarship. The scholarship is given annually in memory of Paula Pearlstein. Tori is a cancer survivor who will use the scholarship at Johnson & Whales University in Rhode Island.
Brian Schmidt from BlackRock was awarded the Expect Miracles Award and delivered a powerful and heartfelt speech on his battle with cancer. MFAC board member Cindi Boudreau of Computershare was awarded the CJ Award for her long-time commitment to MFAC.
MFAC had a tremendous day and is looking forward to seeing all its supporters at next year's event!
